As I have helped to develop the OASIS open-source ad serving platform, I have frequently been asked, "Hey Aaron, why is there no conversion tracking feature in OASIS?".
Good question. In most cases, campaign ROI cannot be determined without conversion information.
The answer is that there has simply not been a pressing need from actual advertisers to track conversions, so the feature has not made its way into the product. Other OASIS features have taken precedence to this.
I have trafficked thousands of campaigns using most of the industry ad serving platforms and only a handful of times have I been asked to set up conversion tracking beacons on confirmation or other landing pages.
Advertisers either don't care about tracking the conversions or don't know that it is possible.
That said, there are literally dozens of third party conversion tracking tools out there that can be quickly adapted to OASIS (or any ad server for that matter), simply by mimicing the ad campaign in the conversion tracking software, setting up the conversion link in the ad server creative, and placing the tracking software's beacons on your landing pages. The downside, of course, is that the two reporting systems are separate. Associating the campaign information (name/impressions/clicks/cost) to the conversion information either requires some custom database importing, a business intelligence product, or a good old manual Excel spreadsheet.
I will be investigating the third-party conversion tracking packages to see which ones integrate best with OASIS.
